Teen Cafe

Haverford Township Day is this weekend! Hope you're all ready for the festivities, cause we sure are. However, if you feel like you just want a place to come and relax during Haverford Township Day or you would like to come and enjoy some refreshments and movie, teens, you're in luck! The Haverford Township Free Library is having their annual Teen Cafe again on Haverford Township Day! We will be watching a movie or two and refreshments will be available. It costs nothing and anybody 6th grade and up or 12 years old or older is welcome. This program is from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the Yellow Room. Hope to see you there!!

Tune up your Cartooning

Do you like to doodle? Would you like to turn those scribbles into awesome cartoons; or just improve your skills? Well then by-golly you're in luck. The HTFL is running a Teen Cartooning Workshop. Starting on Monday, October 15th and every following monday at 4:30 till 6:00pm, these fun filled work shops will take place and will continue for six weeks. Participants must be 6th grade and up or 12 and older. Hope we've "drawn you in". : )

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Are you ready for a smashing good time?!? Well you're in luck because on September 29th from 1pm to 4pm, we're having another Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament. Come and play and have a good time. Prizes will be awarded to the winner. You must bring a Nintendo Gamecube controller. Also , as always, we ask you to bring if possible a small television so participants are not waiting for others to finish to play. Other things that would be appreciated would be Gamecubes, extra controllers, Super Smash Bros. Melee games and memory cards. This event will be held in the Yellow Room.

The Anime Club

The first meeting of the Haverford Township Free Library's Anime Club was action packed this past Monday. Many exciting events and trips were planned for the coming months. The first event will be the club gracing all of Haverford Township by joining the HTFL by marching in the Haveford Township Day Parade in full Cos-Play Costume on Oct. 6. Also the possibility of taking trips to an upcoming anime convention, ZenKaiKon on Oct. 13, was also discussed.

To learn more about the club or to join; meetings are held every Monday and Wednesday at 3:30 in the HTFL's Board Room on the second floor. Meetings are open to all teens and anybody 6th grade and up.

Harry Potter Video Book Club

Borders has launched its Harry Potter video book club on its Web site. Created with theleaky-cauldron.org, the club is moderated by the Leaky- Cauldron's "Pottercast" hosts Melissa Anelli, John Noe and Sue Upton and was filmed with Harry Potter fans who attended the Phoenix Rising Conference in New Orleans, La., in May. Fans of all ages participated in the book club discussion of topics ranging from "Dumbledore's Monumental Mistakes" to "Time Travel and Horcruxes" to "Harry versus Voldemort."

Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and some very dissapointed readers.

The Uglies Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld was an amazing read in the beginning. Uglies was catchy and intriguing, Pretties was tragic and addictive, but Specials was a big dissapointment to me. As the series went on, it seemed like the age group of readers Scott Westerfeld was writing for was getting lower and lower, the plot seemed unfinished, and Special Tally was completely diffrent than the Tally we had come to know and love (although her decisions sometimes make us want to put down the book then and there.) Don't get me wrong, it was a good book, but fell short of Uglies and Pretties by a long shot.

Senior Year there is too directions you can go: Stress about getting into Ivy League or Slack like you aren't going to be working at McDonalds 1 Week after you graduate and realize you lame exsitance isn't relavant.
Sara is Stressing to and extend where a blow torch to a calc book is a considerable opition. She's been waiting and waiting for Dave to call. All Summer. He's Beach Blonde and a jock what isn't great about that?
Tobey had or should I say has and forever will have a huge crush on Sara. But his slacking ways might shine thought and bite all chances with Sara in the ass. There is a good chance his charm wit and big blue eyes might save him. But what about Dave? Dave can't give Sara all the things Tobey can, right?

In this Binding, Eyes-Super-Glued to the Page romantic teen novel is fantastic and clever as it's dynamic characters. And if you happen to read this and I happen to see you I'll know you read this because your eyes will be carrying heavy luggage and blood-shot from reading this.

The True Meaning of Cleavage By: Mariah Fredericks

Though the title may throw you for a spin, this inspiring story of one confused freshmen is witty and creative. Jess is Sari's best friend for life. Plain and Simple. Or so Jess thought. But when Sari falls for the smokin' senior David Cole things go in a different direction. Which happens to be the way David is walking or some person he may have asked for a pencil in the 1st grade. Jess is caught in the middle. Sari used to talk about things other than David but now it's her every thought. As far as Jess can see David maybe out of even Sari's reach. Or is he? Maybe we could ask his girlfriend, she must know right?

It Started With Incantation

It started with Incantation, a book by Alice Hoffman that has been receiving stellar reviews. After that I was hooked.

“I thought I knew the world.
I thought I knew myself.
I thought I knew my dearest friend.
But I knew nothing at all.”

Incantation is a beautifully written, moving story that takes place during the Spanish Inquisition. It’s about love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, and a 16-year-old girl who has been brought up to believe she is Catholic and her discovery that her family is hiding their true Jewish identity.

I had to read more of Alice Hoffman’s books!

Next, I read The Foretelling, an intense, complicated fantasy coming-of-age story about a teen is destined to become queen of the Amazons. While she becomes an expert horsewoman and warrior, she is drawn to mercy and peace.

Aquamarine was next, but read more like a short story than a novel. It’s a sweet coming-of-age novelette for younger readers.

Then I read Green Angel, which I thought was more along the style of Incantation and The Foretelling. When 15-year-old Green’s parents and sister fail to return from the city after an apocalyptic catastrophe, she renames herself Ash as she fends for herself.

Incantation, The Foretelling, and Green Angel are totally different and unrelated stories, but they illustrate Alice Hoffman’s style of lovely, poetic writing encompassing beautiful prose, print and pages.

13 Little Blue Envelopes

13 LIttle Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson - This is a great book! It's about a 17-year-old girl who receives a packet of 13 little blue envelopes from her favorite "runaway" aunt. Following the clues in the envelopes, she leaves her home in New Jersey and makes her way to London where she begins her travels crisscrossing Europe. Well-written and full of surprises, it's a book you don't really want to end. I'm looking forward to Ms. Johnson's next book!

The Boyfriend List

At the suggestion of Kelly (Literary Lunch) I finally got around to reading The Boyfriend List and the sequel, The Boy Book: A Study of Habits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them by by E. Lockhart . Both books were great fun to read and fifteen-year-old Ruby "Roo" Oliver sounds like a real person, with normal crazy, mixed-up feelings. In The Boyfriend List she’s having a tough year due to a series of social debacles, in which she loses her best friends, her boyfriend, and her reputation. Now a “leper,” Ruby starts having panic attacks and ends up with a shrink, Dr. Z, who asks her to make a complete list of the boys with whom she's ever had any thoughts about, crushes, kisses, a relationship or anything. Along her journey of self-discovery, Ruby begins to notice patterns in her life. The sequel is as humorous and witty as the first book as Ruby, who is as likeable as ever, continues to narrate the events in her life. Now in her junior year Ruby adjusts to life after losing her boyfriend and friends. She continues therapy with Dr. Z., gains control over her panic attacks, and eventually makes new friends while reconnecting with some of her old ones.

Today in the Yellow Room

Today we started an anime "mural". I designated a wall in the hallway in front of the Yellow Room and the teens cut a length of paper to fit. They laid it out on one of the large tables to start drawing and I gave them some colored pencils. It's looking great! Since this was an early dismissal day at the Middle School, there weren't as many teens around in the afternoon.

The Caldecott, Newbery, King and Printz awards were announced yesterday at the American Library Association midwinter meeting in Seattle.
The Newbery went to The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron, illustrated by Matt Phelan (S&S/Richard Jackson).
The Caldecott went to Flotsam illustrated by David Wiesner (Clarion).
The Printz went to American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (First Second/Roaring Brook Press).
The Coretta Scott King Author Book winner was Copper Sun by Sharon Draper (S&S/Atheneum Books for Young Readers)
The Coretta Scott King Illustrator Book winner was Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom illustrated by Kadir Nelson, written by Carole Boston Weatherford (Jump at the Sun/Hyperion Books for Children).

Happy New Year!

Hey Teens!
I hope you all had a fun and exciting break and look forward to starting a new year. My name is Ellen and I'm a student volunteering at the Library this month. The library is actually a fascinating place behind the scenes and I would encourage you all to volunteer here. There are all sorts of events going on that you might not know about. First, there is an Anime Club on Mondays at 3:30 upstairs in the Yellow Room. Next Tuesday (January 9th) there's a craft based on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. And, the following Wednesday, January 17th, there's a Sudoku Tournment at 3pm.

So is anyone making any New Year's Resolutions?

I'm resolving to procastinate less and read more books because I normally too busy with schoolwork to read books for fun.

Super Smash Bros this Saturday!!!

Join us this Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Haverford Township Free Library at 1:30 for a Super Smash Bros Melee Tournament. Even if you don't know how to play, come & we will teach you. We need participants to bring their game cubes, game cube controllers, super smash brothers melee games, if possible, to add to what we already have. There is no fee and beverages will be provided. PRIZES will be awarded!

Eragon the movie opens Friday

The movie version of Eragon, Christopher Paolini's bestseller, opens this Friday, December 15. The film stars Edward Speleers as Eragon and other cast members include Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich and Rachel Weisz. Eragon is the first book in Paolini's Inheritance Trilogy. Which do you think will be better - the movie or the book? Let us know what you think!
